Edmonton soccer star Alphonso Davies to undergo surgery after suffering injury playing for Canada - Edmonton

Alphonso Davies’ agent reveals that the Canada captain felt pressured to start against the U.S. in a recent game, resulting in a knee injury.

Bayern Munich has announced that Davies will be out for a significant amount of time due to surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.

The injury comes with just 15 months left before the 2026 World Cup, which Canada is co-hosting.

The 24-year-old Canadian left the game against the U.S. in the 12th minute, favoring his knee after a challenge in the penalty box at SoFi Stadium.

Davies underwent surgery on Wednesday.

His agent, Nick Huoseh, stated that Davies was not at full fitness after the previous game against Mexico and had not planned to start against the U.S. However, he felt pressured by the coach to play as the captain.

Canada Soccer was urged to better manage its players by Huoseh, who mentioned that Davies was upset about the injury.

Canada Soccer’s chief communications officer, Paulo Senra, disagreed with the agent’s claims, expressing full support for Davies and emphasizing the organization’s commitment to player safety.

Coach Jesse Marsch mentioned that Davies was apprehensive about his knee during the match and had been dealing with a minor injury prior.

Further updates from Bayern Munich confirmed the ACL tear and indicated that Davies would be out for several months without specifying a return date.

Canada’s upcoming games include the Canadian Shield tournament in June, where Davies was not expected to participate, given Bayern’s schedule.

Bayern also faced injury setbacks with Dayot Upamecano sidelined for several weeks due to a knee issue, adding to the team’s challenges.

The club expressed support for Davies and Upamecano, highlighting the need for the team to come together and overcome the absences.

With key players injured, Bayern may rely on other defenders like Kim Min-jae and give more opportunities to fringe players in upcoming matches.

Bayern’s upcoming fixtures include a Bundesliga game against St. Pauli and a Champions League quarterfinal clash with Inter Milan.
