Pope Francis urged on June 9 for urgent humanitarian aid to reach Palestinians in Gaza and called for Israel and Hamas to accept cease-fire proposals and release hostages promptly.

During his Sunday noon blessing, Pope Francis expressed gratitude towards Jordan for hosting an upcoming international humanitarian aid conference for Palestinians.

“I urge the international community to take immediate action to assist the war-weary people of Gaza,” he stated. “Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach those in need without obstruction.”

He reflected on the 10-year anniversary of a peace prayer event he hosted in the Vatican gardens with then-Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas present.

“The meeting demonstrated that reconciliation is possible and that peace requires courage – much more courage than war,” he remarked.

Pope Francis voiced his support for the cease-fire proposals and expressed hope for swift acceptance by both sides, acknowledging the challenges of negotiations.

“I pray that the peace initiatives put forth, along with the release of hostages, will be embraced promptly for the benefit of both Palestinians and Israelis,” he added.
