Ontario system ‘not ready’ to introduce involuntary addictions treatment

Ontario’s mental health and addictions minister states that the government is not currently considering involuntary treatment for individuals in crisis due to the current strain on the system.

In an interview with Focus Ontario, Michael Tibollo discussed his plans to revamp Ontario’s mental health and addictions system to ensure timely access to services for everyone within a week.

“One of our priorities is to enhance capacity in withdrawal management,” he explained. “We are focusing on local resources as they are crucial entry points into the care system.”

Tibollo’s efforts in this area coincide with Ontario facing a growing addiction crisis, with demands from mayors for a reevaluation of the approach to mental health and addictions.

During the past year, there has been a surge in opioid overdose deaths, particularly in homeless shelters, and an increase in overdoses involving multiple substances.

Tibollo mentioned that the 280 beds opened by the province have been heavily utilized, with 12,000 visits recorded.

He emphasized the importance of providing support closer to home for better outcomes and lower recidivism rates.

As the addiction crisis worsened, a group of mayors urged the government to explore new regulations allowing involuntary treatment for individuals struggling with addiction and homelessness.

The Big City Mayors Caucus, representing 29 municipalities, requested an urgent review of mental health laws to address the issue.

Tibollo stated that the province is not yet prepared for involuntary treatment due to the existing demand surpassing the system’s capacity.

He noted that legislation would be necessary for any potential introduction of involuntary treatment.
