Opinion | Why Is Gavin Newsom Seeking Common Ground With the Right?

Gavin Newsom’s new podcast, where he engages in conversations with right-wing media stars like Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon, was initially intriguing. It’s important for Democrats to engage with those who have differing viewpoints and to be able to have spontaneous and improvisational discussions. Taking risks and using conflict to attract attention is crucial.
However, Newsom’s approach has been disappointing. Instead of challenging wild claims and standing firm on liberal principles, he often concedes to Republican premises, leading to a display of submission rather than intellectual confidence.
While leveraging Kirk and Bannon’s popularity to reach new audiences could have been an interesting experiment, it has turned into a self-harming exercise for Newsom and liberal listeners.
After listening to the initial episodes of “This Is Gavin Newsom,” it’s evident that Newsom may have drawn the wrong lesson from Donald Trump’s success in reaching right-wing audiences through alternative media. While Democrats can learn about building media channels, there is no benefit in flattering or seeking mutual understanding with figures like Kirk and Bannon.
Newsom’s attempt to engage with Kirk and Bannon without challenging their narratives or highlighting their connections reveals a lack of understanding. Democrats should focus on investing in their own influencers and supporting progressive voices.
It was misguided for Newsom to discuss sensitive topics like trans rights with Kirk, who has a history of making derogatory comments about trans individuals. Democrats need to acknowledge physical differences while advocating for trans rights, instead of seeking agreement with individuals who hold harmful views.
The lack of sustained support from Democratic donors for building a media infrastructure has hindered the growth of progressive voices. Instead of trying to appease figures like Kirk, Newsom should focus on elevating and promoting progressive voices within the party.
By engaging with right-wing media personalities without challenging their narratives, Democrats risk alienating their base and losing support from those who seek strong leadership. Newsom’s approach may have long-term consequences on his standing among Democrats.
While future episodes of “This Is Gavin Newsom” may feature liberals, the initial engagement with right-wing figures has already caused backlash among Democrats. Leaders are expected to fight for their constituents, not seek validation from their adversaries.
Newsom’s choice to prioritize conversations with divisive figures like Kirk and Bannon has led to criticism from within his own party, indicating a disconnect between his approach and the expectations of Democratic voters.
