The latest Pixel update recalibrates this battery feature (that you should be using)

Google recently released its major March 2025 Pixel Drop, introducing various new software features to compatible Pixel devices. Shortly after installing this latest software build, some Pixel users noticed that the charging optimization setting on their phones seemed to be malfunctioning. It seemed like their phones were bypassing the 80% charge limit feature and charging up to 100% capacity instead.

Many users expressed their concerns on platforms like Reddit about this apparent bug introduced by the new Pixel Drop. However, according to Android Authority, it appears that there is no bug to worry about. Google intentionally made a change to the feature to ensure Pixel phones continue to operate effectively.

It turns out that enabling the Limit to 80% feature on a Pixel phone requires occasional charging to 100% capacity to recalibrate the battery and maintain optimal performance. Similar features on other phones, like the iPhone, operate in a similar manner.

Google’s adjustment of the Pixel charging optimization feature is supported by an announcement on the GrapheneOS Discussion Forum. The official GrapheneOS project account indicates that the recalibration process was previously faulty and has been fixed with the March 2025 OTA release. Therefore, users are simply experiencing a necessary calibration process upon updating their Pixel phone.

It’s certainly a relief to hear that Google has resolved this apparent issue, allowing Pixel phones to carry out their charging optimization tasks as intended.
