Govt working on 'template model' for setting up more airports: Naidu, ET TravelWorld

With the growth of air traffic and the increasing aircraft fleet, the government is developing a “template model” for the establishment of more airports, including those dedicated to cargo and flying training organizations. India, as one of the world’s fastest-growing civil aviation markets, currently operates 159 airports, with domestic airlines having ordered over 1,700 planes.

In light of this, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced on Tuesday that the ministry is actively working on creating a template model to accommodate various types of airports.

The plan includes different categories of airports, such as those for cargo and Flying Training Organizations (FTOs).

Naidu stated during an event in the national capital that the government aims to establish a multi-model system, with various technical considerations to be made.

When asked about the potential privatization of more airports, the minister clarified that privatization is a separate matter, and the focus is on expanding airport infrastructure.

“Land availability is a challenge in many areas… we are striving to ensure air connectivity to all regions and, where feasible, minimize land requirements… (for example, by operating) a small airport suitable for ATR aircraft,” he explained.

Domestic air passenger traffic exceeded 16.13 crore in 2024, with the current domestic airline fleet comprising over 800 planes.

Regarding recent incidents involving Air India, Naidu assured that any issues are addressed promptly, with feedback sought from the airline in question.

“If any laws are broken, we take appropriate action, penalize the responsible parties, and ensure compliance. Any issues that arise are dealt with accordingly,” he emphasized.
