Chevy Silverado EV vs Rivian R1T: How two EVs handled the iconic Mint 400 off-road race

A groundbreaking event occurred in the desert near Las Vegas this past weekend: two electric vehicles participated in the Mint 400 for the first time.
Traditionally, vehicles in the Mint 400 desert race have been powered by gasoline. However, in 2024, a Rivian R1T and a Chevrolet Silverado EV ZR2 off-road race truck concept entered the race, marking a significant shift towards electric vehicles in the competition. The Silverado EV ZR2 features special modifications such as longer control arms, unique suspension, and powerful motors that produce a combined 1,100 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque.
Although the Rivian R1T and the Chevrolet Silverado EV participated in different classes at the Mint 400, both vehicles showcased the capabilities of electric trucks in off-road racing. The Rivian completed two laps of the course while the Chevrolet completed one, with both trucks demonstrating impressive performance and efficiency.
Not quite a square off
Due to technical classification differences, the Rivian and Chevrolet trucks did not directly compete against each other at the Mint 400. Each vehicle was in its respective class, with the Rivian in the EV Production class and the Chevrolet in the EV Open class.
Call it the Mint 73
Both the Rivian and Chevrolet trucks completed the race with impressive results. The Chevrolet Silverado EV maintained a 40% state of charge upon finishing, showcasing its efficiency and performance in the challenging off-road environment. The Rivian faced technical challenges but successfully completed the race, highlighting the endurance and capabilities of electric vehicles in off-road racing.
For Rivian, it’s the Mint 146
Despite facing technical issues during the race, the Rivian R1T demonstrated its resilience and performance by completing the course with a 10% state of charge. Both the Rivian and Chevrolet trucks were recognized as class winners, emphasizing the potential of electric vehicles in the world of off-road racing.
Where are Ford, Jeep, Tesla?
With the success of the Rivian and Chevrolet trucks at the Mint 400, there is a growing opportunity for other automakers to enter the world of electric off-road racing. Ford, Jeep, Tesla, GMC, Porsche, and Volkswagen are all encouraged to explore the possibilities of electric vehicles in competitive racing, paving the way for an exciting future of electrified off-road competition.
