Infinix’s E-Colour Shift 2.0 Concept Phone Has a Design-Changing Rear

If you’ve ever felt that your phone’s rear design is boring, Infinix has a solution for you. At MWC 2025, the brand introduced its E-Colour Shift 2.0 concept, a phone that can change its rear design in real-time using technology similar to e-readers. After trying it out, I can say it’s cool, though a bit extravagant. Perhaps it would make more sense as a customizable case.
This isn’t Infinix’s first venture into color-changing technology, but this new version is a step up. The phone’s backplate can shift between different colors and patterns instantly. An AI-powered app allows users to create designs based on surroundings, wallpaper, or even the weather. Want your phone’s back to match your outfit? It’s just a few seconds away. The only downside is that it requires a Wi-Fi connection to process these changes, which may seem like a strange limitation for a concept.
If you prefer simplicity, you can choose from six patterns and six color palettes manually, offering 30 unique combinations. While the color options are currently limited, this is likely to change as the technology advances. The customization aspect is fun and a great way to make your phone stand out from the crowd of black slabs.
However, there are some drawbacks. The color-changing area is not the entire back of the phone but a smaller panel surrounded by a white bezel, slightly diminishing the effect. Despite Infinix’s claim of minimal power consumption, it would be wise to monitor long-term battery impact. During my few days with the phone, I didn’t notice a significant difference.
This concept is based on the Infinix Zero 40 smartphone, featuring a 6.78-inch curved display, MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chipset, 12GB of RAM, and a 5000mAh battery – impressive specs for a mid-range device. The curved back design adds to the phone’s sleek feel.
The E-Colour Shift 2.0 is already functional, and Infinix anticipates it will be available in mainstream devices soon. It wouldn’t be surprising to see this technology in retail phones within the next year.
However, the approach may need reconsideration. Many people use phone cases, hiding the rear design. Smartphone aesthetics may not be a top priority for most users. Applying this technology to smartphone cases, similar to Infinix’s solar-charging concept, could allow users to enjoy their customized design without covering it up.
AI-powered color-shifting phone backs may not be essential, but they offer a fun and unique way to personalize your device. Whether this feature becomes popular remains to be seen, but Infinix is determined to make a statement in the market.
