Russia expressed its willingness on Monday (February 23, 2024) to engage in discussions regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing that it would only cease hostilities once a peace agreement that aligns with Moscow’s interests is reached.
The Russian government also revealed its efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis in collaboration with the United States, highlighting a discrepancy in Europe’s stance, which appears to favor the continuation of the war.

During discussions in Turkey on the third anniversary of Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pointed out the uncertainty surrounding U.S. support for the conflict-ridden nation under the leadership of President Donald Trump. Additionally, Kyiv has reportedly ceded territory to Moscow on the front lines.
Lavrov affirmed Russia’s readiness to engage in dialogue with Ukraine, European nations, or any other parties genuinely interested in facilitating peace. However, he reiterated that hostilities will only cease once negotiations yield a satisfactory and lasting outcome for Russia.
Furthermore, Lavrov urged the United States to designate a representative for prospective peace talks with Russia, following what he described as constructive talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Saudi Arabia the previous week.
In a separate statement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accused Europe of prolonging the conflict, contrasting the European stance with the U.S.’s approach to resolving the Ukraine issue.
“While Europe continues to advocate for sanctions and perpetuation of the war, our ongoing efforts with the Americans focus on finding a peaceful resolution for Ukraine,” Peskov remarked after the EU imposed additional sanctions on Moscow.
The unique mindset of European leaders, according to Peskov, diverges from the cooperative approach taken in negotiations with the U.S.
