Singapore Issues Travel Advisory And Reinstates Mask Mandates Covid Outbreak

Following a surge of 56,000 COVID cases, the Singaporean government has released updated guidelines for both travelers and residents. The Ministry of Health in Singapore has implemented these measures in response to the rising number of infections.

Recent data shows that there were approximately 56,043 COVID-19 cases reported in the week of December 3–9, 2023. This marks a significant increase compared to the 32,035 cases reported in the previous week. The average number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 has risen from 225 to 350, and the average number of cases in the intensive care unit (ICU) has increased from four to nine.

In response to the current situation, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has partnered with public hospitals to develop safety protocols. These protocols include various measures, such as ensuring an adequate workforce and postponing non-urgent elective surgeries. The aim is to increase bed capacity, particularly for emergency cases.

The Ministry of Health is set to open a new COVID-19 Treatment Facility (CTF) in Hall 10 of the Singapore EXPO. This facility will accommodate over 80 stable COVID-19 patients who do not require intensive care.

Individuals experiencing symptoms of acute respiratory infection (ARI) are advised to stay at home. Precautions like wearing masks, limiting social interactions, and avoiding crowded places are recommended for unavoidable engagements.

Travelers are encouraged to take precautions, including wearing masks at airports, obtaining travel insurance, and avoiding crowded, poorly ventilated areas. The public is urged to utilize emergency departments only for serious or life-threatening situations to optimize hospital resources.

The ministry has emphasized the importance of vaccination in the battle against COVID-19. Individuals with up-to-date vaccination records can expect a decrease in hospitalization rates, especially if they have recently received a booster shot.
