Australian IVF giant Genea confirms hackers ‘accessed data’ during cyberattack

Genea, a prominent IVF provider in Australia, has recently experienced a cybersecurity incident that has disrupted patient services and potentially compromised sensitive information.

With 21 clinics nationwide, Genea acknowledged the incident in a statement on its website after being contacted by ABC, Australia’s national broadcaster.

Following inquiries from ABC, Genea enlisted the help of Porter Novelli, a public relations firm specializing in cyberattack responses, to address the situation.

A spokesperson for Genea confirmed the incident to DailyTech, stating that the company is actively investigating the cybersecurity breach and taking necessary precautions to secure its systems.

Despite confirming that the hacker accessed Genea’s data, the specific types of information compromised have not been disclosed.

Genea informed customers of phone line outages before revealing the cyberattack, as reported on their Instagram page.

The MyGenea app, used by patients to monitor their fertility data, was also temporarily disabled due to the incident.

Genea collects sensitive health information from patients, including medical records and test results, but it is unclear if this data was compromised in the breach.

The investigation is ongoing, and affected individuals will be notified if their personal information has been impacted, in compliance with legal requirements.
