Kodai Senga could soon return to bullpen mound after injury setback

LONDON — After experiencing a setback in his rehabilitation, Kodai Senga may be ready to return to a bullpen mound in the next few days.

According to pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, the right-hander has been making progress in his long-toss sessions and is planning to throw a bullpen session on Monday or Tuesday.

Hefner stated that Senga is moving in a positive direction.

In late May, Senga had triceps tightness that led to the cancellation of a bullpen session and later received a cortisone shot.

Earlier last month, there were considerations for Senga to start a minor league rehab assignment, but Senga decided to focus on refining his mechanics before transitioning to actual games.

After Senga completes a bullpen session, he will likely need to face hitters in a controlled environment before being cleared for a rehab assignment.

In spring training, Senga was sidelined early on with a right shoulder strain, and the Mets had hoped he would be ready for a return by early June.

At this stage, the best-case scenario for Senga’s return could be around the All-Star break.

Manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned that Francisco Alvarez needed to return home to Venezuela for a family issue, which may delay his rehab assignment and activation.

Initially, Alvarez was expected to rejoin the Mets at the start of their upcoming homestand on Tuesday.

Alvarez is recovering from surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb.

Following a successful rehab outing on Thursday, Edwin Diaz is set to pitch for High-A Brooklyn on Sunday, as confirmed by Mendoza.

The right-hander, who has been dealing with a right shoulder impingement, is potentially on track to be activated from the injured list on Tuesday.

The Mets announced that infield prospect Jett Williams underwent a right wrist TFCC debridement procedure in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Thursday.
