AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li warns policymakers not to let sci-fi sensationalism shape AI rules

Fei-Fei Li, the Stanford researcher who also founded World Labs, delivered the opening speech at the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in the Grand Palais in Paris. She expressed her views on AI regulation and the importance of a diverse and collaborative AI ecosystem.

Fei-Fei emphasized the need for a healthy AI ecosystem where academia, the community, open-source initiatives, and the public sector all play a crucial role alongside big companies in advancing the technology. She warned against the concentration of resources in a few companies, which could hinder innovation and exploration in AI.

Regarding AI regulation, Fei-Fei stressed the importance of governing based on science rather than sensationalism. She called for a pragmatic approach to AI governance to ensure that policies are based on scientific assessment and understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations.

Fei-Fei also highlighted the potential of AI to positively impact society but cautioned against unnecessary restrictions on AI research. She urged for a focus on practical applications to harness the benevolent potential of AI and mitigate any harmful outcomes.

She expressed her belief that the current era is the first true era of AI with significant implications for civilization. While acknowledging the potential impact on jobs, Fei-Fei believes that AI has the ability to augment and empower individuals if the right decisions are made by policymakers, AI companies, and the research community.

The AI Action Summit is expected to conclude with government leaders and tech CEOs signing and sharing a statement on Tuesday.
