A recent report from Bloomberg on the state of Warner Bros. Games has revealed some interesting developments. According to the report, Rocksteady is back to working on a single-player Batman game, while the Wonder Woman game being developed at Monolith underwent a reboot last year following a change in directors.
The report delves into the situation at Warner Bros. Games after the departure of CEO David Haddad in January, with the games division facing a $300 million writedown through 2024.
Despite the challenges faced by Warner Bros. Games, there is a glimmer of hope for gamers. Rocksteady is reportedly focusing on single-player games once again, with a new Batman project in the works. However, sources suggest that the game is still years away from release.
Regarding the Wonder Woman game, the report states, “One of the company’s biggest bets in development, a video game based on Wonder Woman, has struggled to come together. Early last year, the project underwent a reboot and changed directors. The game has already incurred over $100 million in costs and is still a long way from completion, if it ever sees the light of day.”
This setback would be disappointing for Monolith, known for their work on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, which introduced the innovative Nemesis system. While Shadow of War was released in 2017, the announcement of the Wonder Woman game came in December 2021. If the project has indeed been rebooted, it could potentially be almost a decade between Monolith’s games.
Warner Bros. Games seems to be facing a challenging period, especially after the disappointing releases of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the upcoming closure of MultiVersus in 2024. This is a stark contrast to the successful year of 2023, which saw hits like Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1.
With most of its main studios having released games recently, the reboot of the Wonder Woman game could mean a dry spell for Warner Bros. Games in the near future. Fans may have to wait a few more years for new releases from TT Games, Avalanche, and NetherRealm.
It’s a tough time for Warner Bros. Games, but hopefully they can navigate through the challenges ahead.
