A tragic incident occurred on Friday, June 7, 2024, at a rural branch of the University of Panama (UP), resulting in the death of a young man and injury to another individual as a shooter opened fire, as reported by police and university officials.

The heartbreaking event took place at the UP’s Veraguas regional college, located approximately 250 km west of the capital, where a group of agronomy students had gathered.

An official investigation has been initiated, with a police spokesperson revealing that no suspects have been apprehended at this time.

Instances of gun violence at educational institutions in Panama are exceedingly rare.

Earlier in the day, UP President Eduardo Flores confirmed that an unidentified assailant had targeted “a group of students” in the violent attack.
