Mumbai airport T1 to be redeveloped, phase 1 starts in Nov 2025, ET TravelWorld

Mumbai airport T1

Terminal 1 of the Mumbai airport is set for a historic transformation with the redevelopment by 2028 after which it will be able to accommodate 20 million passengers annually—a 42 per cent increase from its current capacity.

The redevelopment of T1, managed by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), reflects Mumbai’s growth as a key global aviation hub. The project will be executed in phases, starting with the demolition of the existing structure in November 2025. To ensure uninterrupted operations during the redevelopment, the capacity gap will be managed by CSMIA’s Terminal 2 (T2) and the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is set to commence operations in 2025.

Once completed, the new Terminal 1 will have a state-of-the-art infrastructure with eco-conscious design. The redevelopment of the Revamped Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) will cater to domestic operations with a future-ready design capable of integrating international services. With an annual capacity of 20 million passengers, it aims to meet the surging demand in India’s aviation market.

A Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) will link Mumbai’s air, rail, and road networks, offering direct metro access and underground bus stations. This hub will set a benchmark for hassle-free passenger movement.

Advanced baggage handling systems, district cooling, and modern electrical substations will ensure efficient operations across airside and landside areas at the newly built Terminal 1. Drawing inspiration from ocean waves, the terminal’s architecture will feature futuristic wave-inspired forms, indoor greenery, and natural light, creating a vibrant, eco-conscious space.

Speaking about the transformation, Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Airport Holdings, said, “This redevelopment is about more than expanding capacity. It is about future-proofing Mumbai’s position on the global stage. Our priority remains delivering an exceptional passenger experience while building an airport that exemplifies sustainability and innovation.”

Phase-wise Execution with Minimal Disruption

The redevelopment will be carried out in phases starting November 2025, with operations at T2 and Navi Mumbai International Airport absorbing the additional traffic. Advanced technologies like DigiYatra, e-Gates, and self-baggage drop will streamline passenger movement during the transition, while additional staff will be deployed to provide assistance. Airlines and stakeholders will be kept well-informed to ensure smooth operations.

The new Terminal 1 aims to be India’s first brownfield, biophilic, and sustainable airport, setting a global standard for eco-conscious design.
