“Comparison is the death of joy.”
Mark Twain
“When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you.”
Lao Tzu
One of the most common and destructive daily habits is constantly comparing your life and yourself to others.
You compare cars, houses, jobs, shoes, money, relationships, social popularity, and so on.
At the end of the day, this comparison pummels your self-esteem and creates negative feelings within and possibly outside of yourself.
So how can you break free from this harmful habit?
Today, I’d like to share 3 steps that have helped me move away from comparison and towards a healthier outlook on life and myself, though it does take time, so be patient with yourself.
Step 1: Just realize that you can’t win if you compare yourself to others.
Simply acknowledging this fact can be liberating. No matter what you do, there will always be someone with more or better than you.
Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on comparing yourself to your past self.
Step 2: Compare yourself to yourself.
Observe your growth, achievements, and progress towards your goals. This fosters gratitude, appreciation, and kindness towards yourself.
Take time to journal your progress regularly to reinforce this positive habit.
Step 3: Be kinder towards others.
Your behavior and thoughts towards others influence how you treat yourself. Practice kindness and positivity towards others to cultivate the same towards yourself.
Focus on helping and being kind to others, and appreciate the positive qualities in yourself and those around you.
By shifting your focus from comparison to self-improvement and kindness, you will establish a healthier mindset and relationship with yourself and others.
