Bill Belichick was reason Mac Jones failed with Patriots: Damien Harris

Mac Jones’ Struggles in New England Blamed on Bill Belichick by Former Patriot Damien Harris

Former Patriots running back Damien Harris placed the blame for Mac Jones’ lack of success in New England squarely on the shoulders of head coach Bill Belichick.

Harris, who played for the Patriots from 2019-2022, made the comments on “The Athletic Football Show,” stating that Jones’ failures were not his own doing.

“What happened to Mac Jones in New England was not because of Mac Jones,” Harris said, as reported by Sporting News.

Harris criticized Belichick’s decision to remove an offensive coordinator who had helped develop Jones into a potential Pro-Bowler, only to replace him with coaches who lacked offensive expertise.

“Now Mac Jones is in Jacksonville… the breath of Mac Jones in New England — it came and went. It shouldn’t have [gone] the way that it went,” Harris continued.

He attributed Jones’ departure from the Patriots to Belichick’s unwillingness to adapt and make necessary changes for the team’s success.

Harris highlighted the decision to replace offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels with coaches who lacked offensive pedigree as a key factor in Jones’ struggles.

“We drafted Mac. We had a hell of a year… went on to win seven straight. At that time we were kind of looking at ourselves like we might have a Super Bowl run here,” Harris said.

Harris concluded by suggesting that Belichick did not handle the situation with Jones correctly, leading to his departure from the team.

Belichick and the Patriots parted ways after 24 seasons — including six Super Bowl championships — this offseason.
