'Assetto Corsa EVO' Launches on PC VR Headsets in Early Access, But You May Want to Wait

Assetto Corsa EVO had its Early Access launch on Steam recently, introducing the latest installment of the racing franchise to both flat screen and PC VR headsets. Initial reviews are mixed, with VR users advising to wait for upcoming patches to address optimization issues.

KUNOS Simulazioni, the developer of Assetto Corsa (2014) and Assetto Corsa Competizione (2018), released their highly anticipated sequel, Assetto Corsa EVO. The Early Access version features five tracks, 20 vehicles, single player mode, support for SteamVR headsets, and triple screen support.

Although the full content is set to be released in future updates, including 100 cars, 25 tracks, an open world map, career mode, and multiplayer mode, VR users are currently expressing dissatisfaction with the game’s performance.

With over 2,700 reviews, the game has received a ‘Mixed’ score. Many VR users are reporting poor optimization, making the game unplayable in VR.

User Poloman mentioned, “I won’t comment on the performance issues, as this is early access, only remark is that VR is currently unplayable.”

Another user, Mattios, stated, “Unplayable in VR with a RTX 4090 and i9 13900k at lowest settings…Flatscreen works fine, maxed out it barely hits 80% GPU and 10% CPU usage without upscaling.”

Dan added, “Can’t recommend it in its current state, performance optimization is just not there, at least for VR…wait for the coming patches to even consider it.”

Previous iterations of Assetto Corsa have also had Early Access launches with gradual feature releases. VR has been a significant aspect of the series, with the original game supporting Rift headsets in 2013 and expanding to include other headsets in 2017 with OpenVR. Full VR support for Assetto Corsa Competizione was added a month after its initial release.

The studio plans to have the full 1.0 release within a year from the start of Early Access, with hopes for more optimizations to justify the $32 price tag for VR users.
