Meta’s Horizon OS Expansion Reportedly to Kick Off with Premium ASUS Headset, Claims Trusted Leaker

Meta’s Horizon OS to Expand to Third-Party Headsets

In April of last year, Meta announced its plans to release Horizon OS, the Quest-exclusive operating system, to third-party headsets for the first time. XR devices from ASUS, Lenovo, and Xbox were expected to run Horizon OS, although Meta has been relatively quiet about the specifics of these headsets. However, a recent report from trusted leaker ‘Luna’ suggests that ASUS may be the first to release a third-party headset with Horizon OS.

Luna, known for leaking information about upcoming virtual reality hardware and software, has accurately revealed details about previous Meta projects, such as Quest 3S and the inclusion of an Action Button on the headset. Luna’s latest leak hints at ASUS Republic of Gamers headset, codenamed ‘Tarius’, being one of the first third-party headsets to ship with Horizon OS.

According to Luna, the ASUS headset is expected to feature eye-tracking, face-tracking, and quantum dot LCD displays with local dimming or micro-OLED technology. This puts the headset on par with Quest Pro’s most modern features, indicating a departure from Quest’s current consumer offerings.

While the report should be taken with caution, it suggests that Meta is gearing up to compete with Google’s Android XR, which will debut on Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, Project Moohan, later this year.
