Islanders' Brock Nelson snaps 17-game scoring drought

LAS VEGAS — Lou Lamoriello addressed the recent struggles of Brock Nelson, Kyle Palmieri, and Noah Dobson during a midseason State of the Islanders Q&A with reporters. Interestingly, questions about the players came from former Islanders Butch Goring and Thomas Hickey.

Responding to Goring’s inquiry about Nelson and Palmieri, Lamoriello acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence in their abilities to bounce back. He mentioned how quickly things can change in hockey and praised the character of the players.

Later that day, Nelson ended his 17-game goal drought with a goal in the Islanders’ 4-0 victory over the Golden Knights.

Nelson expressed relief after ending his scoring drought and credited his line’s performance in the game. He emphasized the importance of the win against a tough opponent like the Golden Knights.

Nelson has a history of being a streaky scorer, and the Islanders are hopeful that his goal will spark a turnaround for the team.

The Islanders aim to build on their recent win and secure a three-game win streak in their upcoming game in Utah.

If the Islanders are going to prove Lamoriello right and make a run, they need to start stringing wins together quickly.

Nelson, who has seen a dip in his scoring output this season, is expected to play a key role in the team’s resurgence moving forward.

“Nelly’s been all over it,” said Anders Lee. “He’s been playing great hockey. Very happy for him.”

Lamoriello provided updates on several injured players, indicating that some may return to practice soon.

As for Mike Reilly, Lamoriello remains hopeful for his return this season but noted that he is still unable to participate in contact drills following heart surgery.
