Geoguessr-inspired detective game Locator is about puzzles, perspective, and empathy on an alien planet

Locator is a game designed for fans of Obra Dinn and Golden Idol, as well as anyone who appreciates a beautifully crafted map of an alien world. In this detective puzzler, you take on the role of an interstellar cartographer on a mission to find a missing archeologist named Abigail Lidari on a distant planet. Drawing inspiration from the browser game Geoguessr, Locator challenges players to analyze sets of photos and compare them with Abigail’s journal notes in order to pinpoint her exact location on a series of stunning maps.

As you place three pins on the map, you will discover if your guess is correct before moving on to the next set of clues along Abigail’s trail. What begins as a simple task of identifying landmarks quickly escalates into a complex puzzle of deciphering cryptic messages within her journal. The game encourages players to consider different perspectives, immerse themselves in Abigail’s world, and view the environment through her eyes. For example, early on, players must locate specific statues in an alien tomb that Abigail has affectionately named and personalized in her sketches.

“Locator combines the spatial reasoning of Geoguessr with the logical deduction of detective games,” states the Steam page, where a demo is also available. “Utilize constellations, alien architecture, wildlife, cryptic symbols, and even temperature to pinpoint the location of photos.”

Maps hold a special fascination for many, not only as physical representations but also as symbols and metaphors. The game touches upon the concept of the ‘cartographer’s folly’ – fictitious entries or copyright traps that mapmakers use to protect their work. Additionally, it explores the idea that “the map is not the territory,” reminding players not to mistake representations for reality. I am intrigued to see how Locator delves into our connection with Abigail, a character we only know through our reconstructed version of her journey. The game’s release date is yet to be announced.
