James Gunn calls Creature Commandos episode the saddest thing he’s ever written

Creature Commandos has been delving into both the past and present in recent episodes. The show has been advancing the present-day storyline while also exploring the backgrounds of characters like The Bride (Indira Varma) and G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), providing new insights into the events that shaped their identities. The fourth and latest episode, “Chasing Squirrels,” focuses on Weasel (also played by Sean Gunn), revealing the tragic reasons behind the character being wrongly accused of causing the deaths of schoolchildren.

The episode doesn’t explain Weasel’s origins but delves into the gruesome details of the “crime” that turned him into a societal outcast. In an interview with Variety, Creature Commandos creator James Gunn discussed the emotionally dark nature of the episode, which stands out even for the filmmaker known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

“I get really sad talking about it,” Gunn said. “I remember finishing [writing] it. I was in Colorado with my wife, and I remember I said, ‘I think I just wrote the saddest thing that I’ve ever written in my entire life.’”

Viewers witness Weasel’s attempts to save the children who befriended him, only to fail and face unwarranted persecution, further solidifying his status as a misunderstood outcast. Gunn’s affinity for highlighting society’s misfits is evident in how he portrays Weasel’s character.

“At the end of the day, [Weasel], in a lot of ways, is the most noble character in the show,” Gunn stated. “This is a pretty innocent creature who is treated like something else because he looks different than other people.” Gunn hinted at how Weasel’s past will impact future episodes of Creature Commandos.

“You’ll see everything with his backstory come into play in the later episodes,” Gunn teased. “If you talk about the characters existing on some sort of continuum from good to bad, he’s pretty much on the good side.”
