Either PlayStation or Xbox will "struggle mightily" to do well with their next gen console, while Nintendo'll be "the clear winner”, predicts research firm

It’s time to discuss video game boxes once again, along with what the future holds. A research firm has made predictions about the next generation of console hardware, suggesting that either PlayStation or Xbox will need to secure a top spot to achieve success, while Nintendo is expected to fare well regardless.

According to market research company DFC Intelligence (thanks, VGC), their annual market report and forecast indicate potential developments until around 2030. It’s a reminder that time is moving forward, and we are all getting older.

The forecast suggests that only one of Sony or Microsoft will dominate in the upcoming generation, with Nintendo expected to align with the leading console to secure its own success.

“There isn’t room for more than two major console systems,” DFC wrote, predicting a tough battle for third place between Sony and Microsoft based on early momentum.

Factors like pricing, launch dates, and company strategies will influence the outcome, with Sony’s loyal base and strong IP contrasted with Microsoft’s focus on software and distribution models over hardware.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is projected to excel with its Switch 2, benefiting from earlier hardware availability and limited competition in the market.

The report also anticipates a healthy growth trajectory for the games industry starting next year, driven by Nintendo’s new hardware and the highly anticipated GTA 6, signaling a recovery from the post-Covid pandemic decline in recent years.
