Israel conducted strikes on ports and energy infrastructure used by Houthi rebels in Yemen after intercepting a missile fired from the country on Thursday (December 19, 2024), warning Houthi leaders of potential retaliation.
Houthi media reported that the strikes hit power stations, oil facilities, and the port of Hodaidah, resulting in casualties. The group has been targeting Israel in response to its military operations in Gaza.
The Israeli military stated that they targeted Houthi military sites in Yemen, including ports and energy infrastructure in Sanaa, used by the Houthis for military activities.
“I warn the leaders of the Houthi terrorist organisation: Israel’s long arm will reach you too,” warned Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz.
The Houthi rebels have vowed to continue their operations until the aggression in Gaza ceases and the siege is lifted.
The conflict escalated further when a Houthi drone attack in Tel Aviv resulted in the death of an Israeli civilian, leading to retaliatory strikes on Hodeidah in Yemen.
The Houthis have also targeted shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, prompting responses from US and British forces.
Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari emphasized the global threat posed by the Houthis, with support from Iran, and reiterated Israel’s commitment to defending itself against any threats in the Middle East.
