A tragic incident unfolded at a private Christian school in Wisconsin on Monday morning, as a youth opened fire, resulting in the loss of two lives just days before the Christmas break. The shooter also perished, according to police.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes did not provide specifics about the victims but confirmed that multiple individuals were injured at Abundant Life Christian School, which caters to approximately 390 students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Initial reports suggested a total of five fatalities.

“Today marks a somber day, not only for Madison but for the entire nation,” Barnes expressed during a press briefing.

Authorities were alerted to the situation shortly before 11 a.m., and law enforcement officers did not engage in gunfire upon entering the premises. Barnes indicated that it appeared the shooter took their own life.

“The individual responsible was located deceased,” the chief disclosed.

Roads surrounding the school were cordoned off, with federal agents joining local authorities at the scene for support.

“Our thoughts are with the students, faculty, and the entire Abundant Life school community as we await further updates, and we extend our gratitude to the swift-acting first responders,” stated Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers in a release.

The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the incident and that federal officials were coordinating with local law enforcement for assistance.

Abundant Life Christian School is a non-denominational institution.

John Diaz De Leon, a local resident who attends City Church adjacent to the school, recounted hearing a flurry of sirens as police arrived on the scene.

“I had no idea there were so many police cars in Madison. Several officers armed with rifles were present. They entered the school premises with a K9 unit,” De Leon observed. “Subsequently, I witnessed groups of students being escorted out of the school and into the church sanctuary.”
