Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria on December 8, families of detainees in the country’s prisons have been desperately searching for their missing loved ones.
Among the notorious prisons in Syria is Sednaya prison, which has gained notoriety as a ‘human slaughterhouse’ due to the alleged brutal treatment of its inmates.
Sednaya prison was reportedly used as a tool to suppress opposition forces and coerce them into submission. Numerous reports detail the appalling conditions that opposition supporters endured within its walls, leading to its infamous reputation.
Accounts from inside Sednaya prison paint a grim picture of torture, sexual abuse, and mass executions. It is estimated that around 30,000 detainees lost their lives due to the harsh conditions between 2011 and 2018.
The facility served as a high-security prison for political dissidents, members of the opposition, and individuals accused of opposing the Assad regime.
