A timeline of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO and the search for his killer - National

The investigation into the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has expanded beyond New York City with the release of new images.

The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect, in addition to the $10,000 reward offered by the NYPD.

The shooter used a fake ID and paid in cash during his 10-day stay in the city, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. He kept his face covered except when checking in at a hostel.

Surveillance cameras in Manhattan captured the suspect’s movements, helping the police create a timeline of events.

Here is what we know so far about the planned attack described by the NYPD.

10:11 p.m. — The suspected shooter arrives in New York City on a Greyhound bus at the Port Authority terminal. The bus originated in Atlanta and made several stops along the way. It is unclear where he boarded the bus.

He then takes a taxi to the New York Hilton Midtown area and spends about half an hour there.

Around 11 p.m. — He takes a taxi to the HI New York City Hostel at 891 Amsterdam Ave., where he stays until the morning of the shooting. He presents a suspected fake ID and keeps his face covered while interacting with roommates.

During a conversation with a hostel employee, he briefly lowers his face mask and smiles, a moment captured on surveillance footage circulated by the police.

The man checked out of the hostel, as guests are automatically checked out if they do not show up at the front desk by a certain time. Police do not believe he stayed elsewhere and returned to the same hostel the next day.

Dec. 4

Approximately 5:30 a.m. — The suspected shooter leaves the hostel before dawn.

5:41 a.m. — Surveillance footage shows him walking back and forth near the Hilton hotel at 54th Street and Sixth Avenue, where United Healthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, is hosting its annual investor conference. Police suspect he rode a bicycle to the location due to the short travel time. The possibility of the bike being stolen is being investigated.

He is seen visiting a nearby Starbucks, purchasing a water bottle and at least one energy bar before returning to the hotel.

6:44 a.m. — He shoots Thompson as the executive arrives on foot from a nearby hotel. The suspect flees the scene.

6:48 a.m. — The suspect enters Central Park through the 60th Street and Center Drive entrance on a bicycle. Police believe he discards a gray backpack in the park away from security cameras.

6:56 a.m. — He exits the park at West 77th Street and Central Park West, still on the bicycle.

6:58 a.m. — He passes another camera at 85th Street and Columbus Avenue while on the bicycle.

7:04 a.m. — He gets into a taxi heading northbound at 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

7:30 a.m. — He is near the George Washington Bridge and the bus terminal, which offers commuter service to New Jersey and Greyhound routes to Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington.

Following the attack, investigators find ammunition at the scene with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” written in permanent marker, resembling phrases used by critics of the insurance industry.

Dec. 6

Kenny and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch state that the gunman likely left the city on a bus. Although he entered the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, there is no video evidence of him boarding a bus or leaving the station.

“It could possibly be a disgruntled employee or client,” Kenny speculates on a potential motive during a briefing.

A backpack believed to belong to the suspect is found by the police, but its contents are not disclosed.

Dec. 7

Police continue their search in Central Park, with scuba divers seen scouring a pond. Additional photos of the suspect next to and inside a taxi, wearing a blue medical-style face mask, are released by the NYPD.

Despite recovering a fingerprint from the Starbucks purchase and sending items for DNA testing, the suspect has not been publicly identified by the police.
