President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea managed to avoid an impeachment attempt by the opposition party after imposing martial law briefly. Most ruling party lawmakers boycotted the parliamentary vote, preventing the two-thirds majority needed to suspend his presidential power on December 7, 2024.
Although the motion was scrapped, public protests are expected to escalate, demanding Mr. Yoon’s removal and causing further political turmoil in South Korea. Despite criticism from his own party, the People Power Party, they are reluctant to support Yoon’s impeachment to prevent liberals from gaining power.
