Foamstars final season update drops on December 13th
It appears that Square Enix is starting to phase out support for Foamstars, their whimsical foam brawler. The final season is ironically named “Party Goes On!”
“In this last update, expansions will be introduced to improve gameplay, such as the ability to customize each character’s shots and new enhancement elements like Prism Gems, all aimed at ensuring players can continue enjoying the game in the future,” states Square Enix.
“All online services will remain accessible after the conclusion of the ‘Party Goes On!’ season. Additionally, we will be hosting the FOAMSTARS CUP, a series of in-game events named after each character. Furthermore, previous Season Passes will be re-released to allow new players to fully enjoy FOAMSTARS. Players can switch between Season Passes at any time to progress along the Season Pass track of their choice and collect items from previous seasons. This will enable players to acquire all items from each season.”
The PS5 exclusive game became free to play in October of this year, but it seems that this hasn’t significantly increased the game’s popularity.
Initially launched in February as a PS Plus monthly game and exclusively for PS4 and PS5, it later transitioned to a moderately priced premium game in March. However, it appears that this shift didn’t attract a large enough player base, prompting Square Enix to change their business model. An added benefit of this change is that Foamstars, as a free-to-play game, will no longer require a PS Plus subscription for online play.
Foamstars was quickly labeled as a Splatoon imitator by gamers, but it introduced unique ideas such as the ability to construct 3D structures with foam instead of just covering the level in your team’s color.
Reflecting on our Foamstars review, Jim remarked, “Foamstars offers a creatively innovative approach to the hero shooter genre and Splatoon, although those who struggle with its floaty, fluid-based gunplay may find the novelty wearing off quickly.”
