7 Safest Caribbean Islands To Visit During Hurricane Season 2024

Meteorological observations predict that the 2024 hurricane season will be one of the most severe in the last twenty years.

In a typical year, the season generates 14.4 named storms, but this year, we are expecting 23. Similarly, while 7.2 hurricanes are usually formed, this year we anticipate a minimum of 11.

According to experts at the University of Colorado, five out of these eleven hurricanes are projected to be categorized as 3-4-5.

Two weeks ago, the U.S. State Department issued a warning to seven Caribbean countries, providing guidance to Americans on what to do in the event of a hurricane landfall.

These countries include Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Barbados, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Saint Lucia.

Fortunately, this does not mean that your Caribbean vacation is completely ruined.

According to data from the FOX Forecast Center, 7 Caribbean Islands have been the safest from hurricanes in the last 170 years.

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao have not experienced a major landfall in over 130 years.

The last direct hit by a hurricane on Trinidad and Tobago was in 1933. Although the islands were lightly affected by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Furthermore, there are two islands with seven sea colors known as San Andrés and Providencia, which have only encountered two hurricanes in recorded history. These areas are near the Nicaraguan coast but are part of Colombia.

While unforeseen events can occur, any of these islands may end up in the path of a hurricane. However, that is not the norm.

“Every island in the Caribbean can potentially face hurricanes. However, these islands are located south of the ‘hurricane belt’, making them less susceptible to tropical disturbances, hurricanes, or tropical systems,” said FOX Weather Meteorologist Michael Estime.

Selecting where to spend your Caribbean vacation during hurricane season should be a well-considered decision.

Travelers who are unaware of the risks and challenges can have their vacation plans disrupted due to lack of information and preparation.

For instance, Z. Libertador shared his experience of encountering unfavorable weather conditions during a vacation with his family in Miami Beach a few years ago.

“We went to Miami Beach for a vacation in October, staying at a beachfront hotel. There was a massive rainstorm covering the southern half of Florida, leading to rainy and cold weather for four days and three nights. We ended up spending our time indoors watching movies. We only saw the sun when we were leaving for the airport. It was very disappointing,” he recalled on June 3.
