49ers suspend De’Vondre Campbell for refusing to play vs. Rams
The San Francisco 49ers have announced the suspension of linebacker De’Vondre Campbell for three games, effectively ending his season. This decision comes after Campbell refused to enter Thursday night’s game against the Rams, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Campbell expressed his reluctance to play in the NFC West matchup when called upon in the third quarter. The veteran linebacker then walked off the field and headed to the locker room at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
It was reported that Campbell refused to play after losing his starting position.
The 49ers were already facing a shortage of linebackers with Dre Greenlaw (knee) and Dee Winters (neck) sidelined due to injuries sustained during the game.
Shanahan expressed his disapproval of Campbell’s actions, stating, “His actions from the game is just not something you can do to your team.”
Prior to Thursday’s game, Campbell had started 12 out of 13 games for the 49ers. However, the team had been gradually phasing him out in preparation for Greenlaw’s return.
The 49ers, with a record of 6-8, are set to face the Miami Dolphins (6-7) in Miami on December 22.
