2 Arizona women shot to death in along Mexican highway

Prosecutors revealed that two Arizona women were tragically shot and killed on a dangerous stretch of highway in Mexico last week.

The victims, aged 72 and 82, were found dead on Friday morning in an overturned white Nissan Pathfinder with multiple bullet holes along the Sonoyta-Caborca highway, near a Mexican border town, as reported by the Sonora attorney general’s office.

The women, known only by their first names Enedina and Ubaldina, held dual US-Mexican nationality, according to a security source cited by Reuters.

Authorities stated that the women were originally from Caborca.

During the search for the perpetrators, officials discovered a navy blue Ford F-150 truck – reported as stolen – containing magazines, cartridges, four AK-47 rifles, and three ballistic vests, as mentioned by the prosecutor’s office.

Sonora state prosecutors announced, “Security forces from three levels of government immediately initiated an operation to locate and arrest the criminal group responsible, with the support of specialized air and ground forces.”

As of now, no arrests have been made.

The Arizona Republic was informed by the State Department that the victims were US citizens, and the situation is being closely monitored.

A spokesperson from the State Department expressed their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

The location where the bodies were found, near Sonoyta in Sonora state, has been notorious for violence.

Notably, a California graduate student was fatally shot in his SUV in Sonora last year.

Due to crime and kidnapping concerns, the State Department has advised Americans to reconsider travel to Sonora.
