As the Splitgate 2 open beta approaches on 22nd May, 1047 Games has unveiled The Lab, a map creator that will empower the community to craft their own unique maps for the portal-based arena shooter.

Similar to the Forge map creator in the Halo franchise, The Lab promises to be user-friendly for casual map creators while offering advanced features for expert map designers. It allows up to 16 people to collaborate in real-time on map modifications and enables easy sharing of creations. The tool provides various templates, scalable shapes, pre-made map items, environmental props, and gameplay objects to work with.

1047 Games has confirmed that The Lab will continue to receive updates and additional content post-launch.

Splitgate 2, set for the open beta release on 22nd May, introduces a new progression system and faction skills, moving the game towards a hero and class-based shooter experience. This evolution could steer the game into the realm of competitive esports while offering ongoing gameplay enhancements.

The development of Splitgate 2 started in 2022 when 1047 Games paused content production for the original game. Despite the initial success of the original game’s beta release, attracting over 10 million players and drawing comparisons to the Halo series, the developers recognized the need for a major overhaul rather than just adding more content. With the open beta launch imminent, the full release details are still pending confirmation.
