10 Most Dangerous Countries

During our journey through 15 countries from England to Mongolia in the Mongol Rally, we encountered concerns about the places we were passing through. While some areas may seem like the Wild West of the past, there are still more dangerous places in the world. It’s important to note that none of the countries mentioned below were part of our route to Mongolia.
Despite the risks, we have ventured to places like Sudan, the Pakistan border, and have had friends travel through Afghanistan – all countries considered among the most dangerous in the world.
While this post highlights dangerous destinations, we believe that circumstances can change and it’s possible to have a positive experience in places that may initially seem risky.

Travelers from around the globe are drawn to explore different parts of the world, but it’s crucial to research and consider the risks associated with visiting these hostile destinations.
While Louis Armstrong’s song “What a Wonderful World” celebrates the beauty of our planet, it’s also important to acknowledge that not all regions are safe to travel to. Today, issues like drugs, violence, and terrorism pose significant threats in many parts of the world.
Syria

Syria is currently embroiled in a civil war, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives and mass displacement of civilians. The conflict shows no signs of abating, with various factions accused of committing war crimes.
Afghanistan

Afghanistan remains a war-torn country, plagued by landmines, bombings, and ongoing military operations. Political instability and control by extremist groups make it a highly unpredictable and dangerous environment.
Iraq

Despite the fall of Saddam Hussein, Iraq remains a hotbed of terrorism and violence. The presence of terrorist organizations and militia groups has led to frequent bombings and attacks, putting both locals and foreigners at risk.

Somalia

Somalia is characterized by lawlessness and conflict, with warlords, pirates, and insurgent groups vying for control. The country also faces challenges like drought, famine, and high levels of violence.

Pakistan is plagued by militant activity along its border areas, with frequent bombings and kidnappings adding to the chaos. The volatile situation, especially near the Afghan border, makes it a risky destination for travelers.

Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo is plagued by lawlessness, conflict, and abuse, with armed militias and corrupt officials contributing to the instability. Violence, including targeted attacks on women, is rampant in the region.
South Sudan

Criminality Index: 78.18
South Sudan faces challenges like terrorism, violent crime, and ethnic conflicts, making it a high-risk destination for travelers. Religious extremism and militia activities further exacerbate the security situation in the country.

Yemen

Yemen is home to Al Qaeda and Houthi rebels, contributing to ongoing unrest and instability in the country. The presence of extremist groups and frequent violence make Yemen a risky destination for travelers.
Guinea

Guinea grapples with criminal gangs, poverty, and ongoing conflicts that have spilled over from neighboring countries. The region also faces challenges like high HIV/AIDS rates and limited law enforcement presence, making it a precarious place to visit.
Nigeria

Nigeria has a history of violence stemming from religious and ethnic conflicts, making it an unstable and dangerous destination. Travelers are advised to exercise caution and avoid areas prone to conflict and violence.
While these countries may pose significant risks, with thorough research and planning, it’s still possible to explore them safely. We remain open to visiting all destinations, including those listed above, with the necessary precautions and awareness of the local situation.
